Teams

Our athletes compete individually and in teams in the following track and field and off-track competitions:

National Athletics League (NAL)

This is the top-tier senior track and field competition in the UK, bringing together the best clubs from across the country to compete at the highest level. City of York AC joined this prestigious league for the first time in 2025 and compete in the Championship North division. 

UK Youth Development League

This is the premier national competition for young athletes, giving the next generation the chance to experience high-quality team athletics. City of York AC competes in both the lower age group (U13/15) and the upper age group (U17/20) leagues, providing a pathway for juniors to develop their skills, confidence, and competitive spirit. The YDL is all about teamwork – every athlete’s effort counts towards the club’s overall score, and the camaraderie between athletes, coaches, officials and parents makes each match a fantastic day out. We are proud to have made the national finals in this competition for the last 4 consecutive seasons. 

Northern Track and Field League

This is a competitive league that brings together clubs from across the North of England for exciting senior-level athletics. City of York AC is proud to field a strong team in the Premier division of this league each season, with athletes competing in a full range of track and field events to earn points for the club. It’s a fantastic opportunity for athletes (U17 up) of all abilities to gain experience, push for personal bests and contribute to the team’s overall success.

PECO Cross Country League (Leeds)

This is a friendly yet competitive winter series that brings together clubs from across West and North Yorkshire for a season of off-road racing. Open to all ages and abilities, it’s a great way for City of York AC athletes to stay fit during the winter months, enjoy a variety of scenic courses and be part of a fun team atmosphere. Points from each race contribute to both individual and team standings, and the league’s inclusive spirit means everyone’s effort counts. Whether you’re chasing a podium finish or just enjoying the fresh air, PECO is a brilliant way to experience the social  and competitive side of cross country running.

West Yorkshire Cross Country League

This league is a long-standing and well-respected series that attracts strong competition from clubs across the region. Taking place over the autumn and early winter months, it offers challenging courses, varied terrain, and a great opportunity for athletes of all ages to sharpen their racing skills. City of York AC fields a committed team in every fixture, with performances contributing to both individual rankings and overall club standings. The league is known for its competitive edge, but it’s equally valued for the camaraderie, team spirit, and sense of achievement it brings to everyone who takes part. 

York & District (10k) Road Race League

This is a popular summer series that brings together local clubs for a friendly yet competitive programme of evening races. Staged at different venues around York and surrounding villages, each race offers a unique course and atmosphere, with distances kept to a swift and accessible 10 kilometres. City of York AC athletes of all abilities take part, from seasoned racers to those trying road racing for the first time. The league is a fantastic way to enjoy the social side of running, improve fitness and speed, and represent the club in a supportive and encouraging environment. 

Yorkshire Championships

These championships are one of the highlights of the athletics calendar, bringing together the best athletes from across the county to compete for individual and club honours. The Track and Field Championships take place in May each year. 

North of England Championships (all disciplines)

These championships bring together top athletes from across the region for one of the most prestigious competitions on the athletics calendar.

National Road Relays

This competition brings together the best club teams from across the country for fast-paced, high-energy competition. Teams are made up of athletes running set-distance legs in a relay format, combining individual speed with tactical teamwork. 

National Cross Country Relays and Championships

This is the pinnacle of the UK’s winter running season, attracting the very best athletes and clubs from across the Country. The relays offer fast, tactical racing over shorter distances, while the championships provide a true endurance test across challenging courses and varied terrain.

England Championships

UK Championships

The premier domestic competition in British athletics, bringing together the nation’s best athletes to battle for national titles and, in many cases, selection for international teams. The standard is exceptionally high and for City of York AC athletes, competing at National Championships is both a tremendous honour and a huge challenge.

England Athletics Age Group Changes

Disability Athletics

Our friendly athletic group is open to people aged 8+ with any type of disability – physical, learning or sensory, and we make sure everyone can take part at their own level. When: Fridays 7-8pm. April to October – Outdoors. November to March – indoors at the University (with a December break). Events: Running, Long Jump, Shot Putt, Soft ball, Turbo Javelin. Coaches: Two qualified level 2 coaches – Lucy and Christina, with extra help from parents when needed. We are affiliated with Special Olympics York, taking part in their competitions as well as the YES series club events. Masters Athletes

City of York AC has a growing number of masters athletes who compete in local, national and international competitions. The masters athletics scene is thriving and club members join local Masters federations such as Northern Masters Home - Northern Masters Athletic Club in order to take part in National and International competitions. British masters organise various competions throughout the indoor and outdoor season - BMAF - British Masters Athletic Federation - Inspiring everyone over 35 to take part in Athletics. This year’s European masters is being held in Madeira in October with a number of our club athletes taking part - Home - EMA

Our Coaches

Our coaches are the heartbeat of City of York AC, inspiring and guiding athletes of all ages and abilities to reach their potential. We’re always looking for enthusiastic people to join our coaching team – whether you’re an experienced coach, ex-athlete, parent or completely new to the role.  

No prior coaching background? No Problem! We’ll cover the cost of all coaching qualifications, provide mentoring and support, and help you develop the skills and confidence you need. Coaching is a fantastic way to give back to the sport, be part of a friendly and supportive club community, and see athletes grow and succeed.
