The Northern Cross Country Relays took place on Saturday at their usual venue of Graves Park in Sheffield.
The under 17 women’s team came within 7 seconds of a medal as they came 4th. Beth Lewis ‘won’ the opening leg in a time of 7.32 for the 2.3k leg. This time turned out to be the fastest leg of the race. Lucy Davey dropped two places to 3rd as she ran 8.43 for the 2nd leg. Nina Hopkins then ran 8.59 for the last leg but was passed late on by the runner from Keighley & Craven as the team came home 4th. The club’s under 17 women’s B and C teams enjoyed a close contest as they came 17th and 18th respectively with a strong last from B team runner Lydia Scott being decisive in the internal club battle.
The Club’s under 15 girls team came 9th in their race as Hannah Lovett (7.50), Marianne Lowson (7.58) and Alice Muinoen-Martin (8.23) maintained a position of just inside the top 10 for the entire race. An incomplete B team was lying 22nd after 2 legs.
In the under 13 girls race Evelynne Metcalfe (6.17), Scarlet Bycroft (6.14) and Harriet Brown (6.34) combined well to come 12th. In the under 13 Boys race the club’s A team just managed to stay ahead of the club’s B Team as they came 22nd and 28th.
The club fielded two teams in the senior men’s race as two young teams performed well to come 14th and 25th against much more experienced teams in the race. For the A team Oskar Fraser-Krauss ran the fastest leg from the club on the opening 3.2k leg with 10.33 to come 15th out of 60 teams. The last three legs then maintained 14th place on the final 3 legs through Samuel Dickinson (10.49), William Hardy (11.20) and Luke Haynes (11.43). It was a similar story in the B team as Cole McAndrew ran the fastest leg (10.53) from the team to come 25th on the 1st leg. Tom Davey improved this to 19th on leg 2 with 11.09 before Ewan Rae (12.29) and Miles Watson (11.24) closed the team to 25th.
Road Racing
The club had a good presence at the front end of the popular York 10 mile race that took place on Sunday. Katy Wood won the female race for the third year in a row in a time of 56.55, despite being in a heavy spell of marathon training for her marathon debut at Valencia in December. Laura Thompson was 2nd vet 35 and 7th overall in 60.58 with Angharad Pryce being 44th with 72.21. In the men’s race Adam Bateman was first home for the club in 6th place with 54.41 with Jason Reubenheimer (57.46), Tim Pattinson (58.23) and Jack Ford (59.06) all running inside the hour mark. Allan Scott ran a PB for 62.13 to place 8th vet 45 with Mike Raynes (71.46) and John Lewis (72.52) being 21st and 23rd vet 50s. Peter Hanson was 26th vet 55 with 76.56.
In the York Marathon that also took place on the same course but a bit longer! Steve Dring demolished the vet 55 club record with 3.04.38 to place 8th in the vet 55 age group for the race. Club 400m legend, Richard Buck, also ran the marathon in 4 hours 21 minutes as he took part in an event that is just over 100 times further than the 400m racing he used to do in his prime. Hope Richard enjoyed seeing a very different side of the sport and that you enjoy your recovery!
Across the other side of the Pennines Jess Roberston-Dover took almost a minute off her PB and under 20 10k road club record with 36.29 at the Trafford 10k to place 2nd under 20 and 18th overall. Wilson Moisey-Smith ran his first 10k road race at the Scarborough 10k as he ran 40.44. Bethany Ellerker ran 28.30 in the 5k race that also took place at Scarborough.
Parkrun
Mark Bolland-Cage took 13 seconds off his parkrun PB as he came 1st out of over a thousand runners on the Knavesmire in 15.43. Sophie Robertson-Dover turned the tables on mum Chrissie at Hull parkrun as she reversed the previous race between the two at last week’s West Yorkshire Cross Country League. Sophie came 2nd in 18.46 with Chrissie getting 3rd in 19.00. Chrissie did have the consolation of improving her own vet 45 club record at parkrun by 14 seconds. Oliver Walker and Josh Reid had junior age group wins with Jon Blake and Gary Ibbotson getting veteran ones. Lenny Kirk and Josephine Lowson were first in the York Junior parkrun.
