Road Running
Well done to our Senior Women’s team who took bronze medals in the Northern Road Relays that were held at a very wet Leigh Sports Village, home of Keeley Hodgkinson. This is the first time the club has taken home a senior medal in what is always a well contested northern event. The club also had 10th place finishes from both under 15 teams and the under 17 men’s team with both the senior men and under 17 women coming 17th.
Katy Wood in her first race back from 6 months of injury problems gave the senior women a good start on leg 1 as she came home in 7th place. Jessica Robertson-Dover and Helena Costa then moved the club up to 4th after 3 legs as they ran very similar times. Laura Thompson then overtook the Liverpool runner halfway round the last leg to move the club up into third whilst keeping away from the Sale and Border runners who were within 100 metres for all the last leg.
The senior men comfortably qualified for the national road relays as they came 17th which was well within the top 25 A teams that are given places at the event. Angus McMillan ran a good first leg to place 3rd on the opening leg. Adam Bateman, Simon and Mark Bolland-Cage kept the club inside the top ten after four legs but unfortunately there were too many teams within shooting distance on the last two legs.
The under 15 and under 17 junior teams all acquitted themselves well on a course that had a mixture of road and trail that got very wet as the afternoon went on. Both under 15 and the under 17 men were around the 10th place for all their races with the under 17 women in the mid teens.
Hopefully everyone has dried out after a very wet but enjoyable day.
In other road running news Stephen Dring continued his preparations for an autumn marathon as he ran 1.28.38 in the Humber Half Marathon to place 33rd overall and 2nd Vet 55.
Track and Field
The English Schools Combined Events Final at Chelmsford saw a brilliant 3rd place and England selection for Juliette Macquin-Jones. In the hurdles she made the A race and faced almost an English Schools hurdles final, but held together for a good result 12.02 but losing 100 points on the leaders. Then an excellent set of 9.88 shot, 1.44 high jump, 5.16 long jump and 2m 40 800 moved her through. Juliette has been selected to represent England in the Indoor International in Glasgow in December.
Juliette Callau won the rerun of English Schools Hurdles Final, and 8.85 shot, 1.50m high jump, 4.92 long jump took her in to the final 800m event in joint 2nd. She worked hard and had a reasonable run to match her pb of 2m 51 and with the points being very close she ended up 6th.
Imogen Bind had a good day to add 180 points to her pb and finish 31st. And had the bonus that with Juliette MJ and another North Yorkshire finished 3rd team so Imogen won an English Schools medal.
In the Senior Girls heptathlon Olivia Tweddle was 30th and Abi Moss 31st. Both had a couple of mishaps / bad events but persevered in good spirit to make sure they finished.
In the Junior Boys, Murray Barnard was carrying an injury but managed the first 4 events well including a wind legal pb in hurdles, and 1.53m high jump - his second highest ever. The 800m he was badly injured and it would usually be a strong event, but he still finished 27th out of 39 in the final result.
Parkrun
Despite the wet weather 19 runners from the club did parkrun on Saturday. James Tucker came 1st at Kovach in Canada in 15.56. The two Ibbotsons both came 2nd at Vermuyden Way near Scunthorpe with Gary running 21.46 and India 23.55. Will Torgersen came 2nd on the Knavesmire in 17.06 with Juliet Horne coming 3rd at Selby in 21.05. There were veteran age group wins for Steve Wright, Jon Blake, Allan Scott and Mike Raynes with junior age group wins for Josh Reid, Tom Davey and Sebatian Brown.
